Gov. Kim Reynolds has signed a law providing new property tax breaks for seniors and military veterans and reining in how much money local governments can collect in taxes.

"Hardworking Iowans have been asking for property tax relief and today we’re delivering on that ask," said Reynolds, a Republican, before signing the legislation Thursday afternoon in a ceremony in the Iowa Capitol rotunda, flanked by lawmakers.

Republican lawmakers have said since last fall that lowering property taxes would be a priority this year, but it took until the end of the legislative session to reach a deal.
