In his first public address after winning the 2024 U.S. presidential election, President-elect Donald Trump dedicated part of his victory speech to recognizing Elon Musk’s achievements and his companies’ recent contributions, especially through SpaceX. In an era marked by rapid advancements in space exploration and technology, Trump's comments highlight Musk’s central role in shaping the future of American spaceflight.
Speaking to a crowd on election night, Trump was visibly enthusiastic as he recounted a recent test flight of SpaceX’s massive Starship rocket, a revolutionary vehicle that SpaceX envisions for deep-space missions, including eventual human voyages to Mars. Trump praised the ingenuity and impact of Musk’s work, placing him in a unique category of modern American innovators. Trump said he was so captivated by the launch that he kept a potential donor on hold for 45 minutes while watching the SpaceX livestream. "It felt like I was watching a movie," he joked, marveling at the groundbreaking capabilities demonstrated by Musk and his team.
Trump also detailed a more personal instance where Musk’s technology directly impacted Americans in need. In the wake of Hurricane Helene, a devastating storm that wreaked havoc in parts of North Carolina, residents turned to Starlink, SpaceX’s satellite internet service, as a means of maintaining vital communication lines. Trump described receiving requests from North Carolina officials to connect with Musk and secure Starlink services for emergency relief.
“The people from North Carolina came to me and they said, 'Would it be possible for you to speak to Elon Musk? We need Starlink,'" Trump recalled. At the time, Trump wasn’t fully familiar with Starlink and admitted, "I asked, 'What's Starlink? What the hell is it?'"
Musk explained Starlink as “a communication system that’s very good,” leading Trump to ask if Musk could expedite setup in North Carolina. According to Trump, Musk acted immediately, deploying Starlink to the storm-hit areas in record time. SpaceX even waived the broadband service fees through the end of 2024 for affected regions, shouldering only hardware costs. Trump applauded Musk’s rapid response, crediting him with "saving a lot of lives" in the process.
The admiration appears to be mutual. Musk, known for his outspoken support of deregulation in the technology and space sectors, endorsed Trump in the 2024 presidential race, aligning himself with Trump’s focus on scaling back federal oversight on industries. Over the years, SpaceX has found itself at odds with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), particularly during Starship’s testing phase. The regulatory body has imposed launch restrictions and penalties on SpaceX due to safety violations, prompting Musk to call for the resignation of FAA Administrator Michael Whitaker in September, following fines over launch compliance.
