VR performance on the Radeon RX 7900 XTX is finally good!... And it only took AMD 7 months to make it happen. When I first tested the 7900XTX in VR back in March of this year I found AMD still had some work to do on their drivers to get VR games running properly. In most games I experienced game breaking stuttering and in others I saw strange visual artifacts and there were even some games that performed far worse than they should have. On 6 July 2023 AMD released their Adrenalin 23.7.1 driver and claimed they'd finally fixed the problems their 7000 series GPU's were seeing in VR applications. I of course needed to put this to the test and check the validity of their claim. While I found that AMD had in fact got their drivers figured out I ran in to another problem with my Quest 2 headset. Despite the 7900XTX being AMD's most powerful GPU on the market the visuals I was seeing in the headset did not look good at all! I tried switching encoders from h.264 to h.265 in the Oculus Debug Tool (ODT), but the graphics still looked like doo doo. I increased the encode resolution and encode bit rate but again there was no difference to what I was seeing in the headset. I then fired up Virtual Desktop to see if the issues I was having were just Oculus/Quest Link/Air Link issues due to Meta/Oculus' software or if AMD still had more work to do. As the title of the video states, I found it's now Meta's turn to fix their software. Despite the visuals looking like garbage I was still able to play a dozen games and test how well the 7900XTX performs and as far as I'm concerned Nvidia better watch out; the RTX 4080 now has a much less expensive competitor.
