Christian Coleman's Insane 100m Sprint at Xiamen Diamond League
Former world champion Christian Coleman blasted out of the blocks to win the men’s 100meters at the Xiamen Diamond League.
Coleman crossed the line in 9.83 seconds, matching the best time in the world this year, to draw huge roars at the Egret Stadium.
He was ahead of Jamaican Kishane Thompson, who clocked 9.85 seconds for silver. American 2022 world champion Fred Kerley, who failed to qualify for the final at the world championships last month, took bronze in 9.96 seconds.
Using all 10 lanes inside the Egret Stadium, the American who finished fifth at last month's Budapest World Championships - made a superb start and stayed clear despite a fast finish from Kishane Thompson.
Coleman's winning time of 9.83 matched Zharnel Hughes and Noah Lyles' 2023 joint-world lead with Jamaican Thompson setting a personal best of 9.85 in second to qualify for the Diamond League Finals in Eugene, Oregon, in a fortnight.
Coleman led from start to finish to equal Noah Lyles' world-leading time in 2023 and said he was encouraged to respond following his fifth-place finish at worlds.
"It hurt a little bit, but I knew what I was capable of doing and I knew what I was ready to do," Coleman said, reflecting on his Budapest effort. "Then my mind transitioned into the next opportunity for success. I knew coming here it would be a world-class field and an opportunity for me to bounce back."
Italy's reigning Olympic champion Marcell Jacobs has barely raced since his Tokyo Olympics victory and finished a disappointing seventh with a time of 10.05 as he nears the end of another injury-marred season.
Ackeem Blake's hopes of making the Diamond League Final were swiftly ended as he fell out of the blocks. The Jamaican eventually crossed the line 15 seconds after the rest of the field.
