I've heard many stories of what these woods used to look like, stories passed down by the loggers themselves. They would talk about cutting down trees so big that six grown men were able to gather around and play cards. The trees, too massive to move, would be milled on site, and then brought out of the woods and loaded up onto waiting trains to be brought into Montreal.
Every fall, I would walk out into these very same woods, and find large, decaying stumps, trying to imagine the woods as the loggers saw it. There was always a point that seemed impassable, too damp and boggy, that I would always turn away from, and go back from where I came. Little did I know, this was the part of the woods I had been searching for this whole time, the part of the woods where the ancient giants slept.
During the summer we had two droughts, and the woods never got a chance to replenish their reserves before fall settled in. This time I got to go where I had never been before, and the awestruck feeling I had when I found the remains of the giants still sits with me today.
At first, there was one, and it was huge. Then another, and from that one, another... each one more massive, and more impressive. Some of these stumps are as wide as I am tall, and some of them I still have to climb to see the top. While I am sad that I was not alive to witness them in all their glory, I am here now to witness what they have become.
While they might not seem impressive to everyone, they are more than just stumps to me. They have become entire ecosystems, existing so that other organisms can live. And to me, that is the beauty of nature... it will always continue, and will always thrive.
I will go back to this part of the woods, I really don't feel like I did them justice this time. And I know that as I keep visiting and getting to know them, each one will reveal their true selves to me, and I already can't wait to go back there again.
