One of the biggest obstacles of being a songwriter is writing music that sounds exactly like what you had in mind. Today I'm sharing one of my favourite exercises to train your ears & brain for exactly that purpose. It's amazing for songwriters and musicians, because it helps you connect your imagination to your skills.
Quick Recap:
Step 1
Take a song and listen through it a couple of times. Write down anything that sticks out, like cool licks, instruments, mix, etc.
Step 2
Make a timeline of the song. On this timeline write the different sections of the song, and draw a tension-curve along with the song, so you can see where it builds up, resolves, subverts energetic expectations.
Step 3
Draw along with the music, and draw the different instruments and sounds on paper, depending on where in the music they are (ex. bass is low on the paper, but piano might be either above or below a singer. Violins would be to the left of the paper, but so would most backing choirs.)
Step 4
Focus on one instrument at a time. Listen to how it influences the other parts. Writing it down, or playing or singing it really helps you understand the instrument better.
I use this technique about once per week. Once a week really brings me amazing benefit, but it's still do-able timewise.
