Type A aortic dissection is a life-threatening condition in which a tear occurs in the inner layer of the aorta, the major artery that carries blood from the heart to the rest of the body. This tear allows blood to flow between the layers of the aorta wall, causing the layers to separate (dissect). The exact causes of aortic dissection are often linked to conditions that weaken the aorta, such as high blood pressure, connective tissue disorders (like Marfan syndrome), or atherosclerosis. Symptoms typically include sudden, severe chest or upper back pain, shortness of breath, fainting, and weak pulse in one arm. Diagnosis involves imaging tests such as CT scans, MRIs, or echocardiograms. Immediate treatment is crucial and often requires emergency surgery to prevent fatal complications.
Aortic root replacement, commonly referred to as the Bentall procedure, is a complex surgery used to treat Type A aortic dissection. The procedure involves replacing the damaged section of the aorta and the aortic valve with a synthetic graft and a mechanical or biological valve. During the surgery, the coronary arteries are reattached to the graft to ensure normal blood flow. This procedure not only repairs the dissection but also strengthens the weakened part of the aorta to prevent future issues. Recovery typically requires a hospital stay of several days, followed by regular follow-ups to monitor heart and aortic function.
