Total knee replacement (TKR) is a surgical procedure performed to replace damaged knee joints with artificial joints called prostheses. This surgery is often performed on patients with severe arthritis or a severe knee injury.
TKR is a major surgical procedure that is performed under general anaesthesia and usually takes about one hour to complete. During the procedure, the surgeon makes a cut over the knee, then removes the damaged bone and cartilage while leaving healthy bone intact, and then places the implants where required.
Robotic knee replacement improves quality of life by reducing pain and improving mobility. It is also more precise and requires a shorter hospital stay than a traditional knee replacement procedure. However, as with any surgery, there are risks associated with TKR, such as blood clots, nerve damage, and a higher risk of infection.
Based on the patient's age and health, recovery from knee replacement surgery can take several weeks or months. After the surgery, the patient is recommended to take physical therapy to help regain strength and movement in the replaced knee joint. Pain relievers may also be given to ease any discomfort during the recovery process.
