1. Myasthenia gravis is an autoimmune disorder that causes muscle weakness. A new clinical trial suggests the advanced blood cancer immunotherapy known as CAR-T could be adapted to treat myasthenia gravis, offering a longer-lasting reduction in symptoms than current treatments. https://go.nih.gov/BOblwxi

2. Screening newborns for a deadly immune disease called severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID) can significantly boost the five-year survival rate of affected children, according to an NIH-funded study. Researchers hope more countries will introduce population-wide newborn screening for SCID. https://go.nih.gov/n9aVyVA

3. New research from an NIH-funded clinical trial found that taking low doses of aspirin daily increased the risk of anemia in people aged 65 years and older by approximately 20%. Given these findings, care providers may want to consider periodic monitoring of red blood cells or hemoglobin. 4. Xylazine is the active ingredient in a veterinary tranquilizer often added to illicit opioids. A study in rats suggests that when used in combination with opioids, xylazine may damage the ability of the brain to get oxygen. 5. Using 3-D models of ovarian cancer tumors, scientists found differences in gene activity based on the location of the cancer cell in the tumor.
