At UFC 307, Mario Bautista edged out a split decision victory over the legendary Jose Aldo. Aldo was just one round away from winning, but Bautista’s clinch-heavy approach helped him secure the win.
Bautista slowed the pace by keeping Aldo, 38, against the cage, preventing the former champion from fully utilizing his striking skills. Aldo’s best performance came in the second round, where he managed to maintain distance and land clean shots. However, the judges ultimately favored Bautista’s control, awarding him the first and third rounds on two of the three scorecards.
Judges Derek Cleary and Mike Bell scored the fight 29-28 for Bautista, while Chris Lee gave Aldo the same score in reverse. This marks Aldo’s second loss in his last three fights, with his only win in that stretch being a decision victory over Jonathan Martinez. The loss leaves Aldo in a difficult position, as the UFC seems more inclined to match him against rising contenders rather than fellow veterans.
Many fans, including Conor McGregor, expressed frustration with Bautista's use of the clinch to stall the fight. McGregor suggested a rule change, the "McGregor Clock," which would penalize fighters who consistently stall in the same position without making progress.
