Welcome to the Music Production miniseries. I will be walking you through the creation of a Pop EDM track from start to finish. These tutorials are conducted in REAPER but can be followed by users of any DAW. The plugins used are FREE at the time this video was released.

In this video, we’ll talk all about one of the most exciting parts of creating an EDM beat - effects and automation!
Specifically, we’ll talk about adding EQs and compressors, and using automation to bring our tracks to life.
We’ll start with placing a low pass filter EQ on our melodic tracks and use automation to sweep through the frequencies within the EQ. We’ll open up the automation lane for these tracks and draw in the automation points to exactly where we want to dial in the effect. Then we’ll copy the effects and automation lanes to the other tracks in the intro of the song.
Next, we’ll add a sidechain compressor to our chords and bass to provide a pumping effect that is prevalent in many different EDM and pop styles today. We’ll create a silent kick track that we’ll route and feed into the compressors on our chords and bass tracks. Then we’ll dial in the compressors using the ratio, attack, release, and threshold parameters to create the exact pumping effect we desire.
This is an exciting video especially for beginners who are looking to dive into the world of FX and automation.
