Google Doodle for Jeanne Baret's 280th Birthday | French Botanist & Bougainvillea Discoverer
The Google Doodle posted on Google France today commemorates the 280th birthday of Jeanne Baret. Jeanne Baret was a famous French Botanist who was born on this day in the year 1740. French laws in those days prohibited women from entering navy ships. So Baret decided to dress up as a man in order to be able to join the global expedition. During the expedition, Jeanne Baret and her colleague Philibert Commerson collected over 6,000 specimens of plants. Jeanne is credited for the European discovery of the bougainvillea vine during the Brazil halt. Today’s Google Doodle depicts the bougainvillea vine in bloom, wrapping around Jeanne Baret aboard the Étoile navy ship. In the year 2012, a newly discovered plant from the Solanum genus was given the species name “baretiae,” in honor of Jeanne Baret.
