Huge Blue Hole Found in Mexico Bay | Marine Sinkhole | Frontiers in Marine Science | SciTech Vault
A massive marine sinkhole or “blue hole” has been discovered in Chetumal Bay, in the southeastern coast of Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula. Scuba divers and marine experts have recently conducted several studies to fully understand the nature of this mysterious oceanic structure. Karstic systems such as oceanic blue holes are formed from the dissolution of limestone. With an estimated depth of 274.4 meters, the “Taam ja’ Blue Hole” is presumably the second deepest known blue hole in the world. This enigmatic blue hole is nearly circular in shape at its surface and it encompasses an area of approximately 13,690 square meters. The sides of the blue hole are steep with slopes greater than 80°. These steep blue hole slopes are covered with biofilms, sediments, limestone, and gypsum ledges.
