0:16 - Creating Smart Objects
Applying filters directly to the pixels within a layer is a destructive process. The change to the pixels is permanent and can't be undone. Embedding layer content within a Smart Object protects those pixels and allows for any number of transformations and/or filters to be applied. Any changes made to a Smart Object can be easily tweaked or removed at a later time. With a layer selected, choose "Convert for Smart Filters" from the Filter menu to create a Smart Object.
1:03 - Vignette With Camera Raw Filter
With the Smart Object selected, choose Camera Raw Filter from the Filter menu. Inside the Camera Raw dialog box, click once on the Effects panel to reveal the Vignette options. Dragging the Vignetting slider all the way to the left will heavily darken the image edges. The sliders for Midpoint, Roundness and Feather can then all be adjusted while clearly visualising their changes. The last step is to then set the Vignetting slider to taste. Choosing OK closes the Camera Raw dialog box. An entry for Camera Raw Filter should now be seen on the Smart Object within the Layers panel. The eyeball icon turns on/off the visibility of the vignette. Double clicking the "Camera Raw Filter" text will reopen the Camera Raw dialog box and allows for the editing of the vignette. Dragging the filter entry within the Layers panel to the trash can icon at the bottom of the Layers panel will permanently delete the filter.
3:46 - Applying Vignette With Pixels Off Canvas
It is preferable to work non-destructively in Photoshop where possible. For example, masking, as opposed to deleting, provides far more editing choices later in the design process. When employing this design method, layers will frequently have pixels not visible within the confines of the canvas. This can be problematic when using the Camera Raw Filter to apply a vignette as this vignette will be added around the edge of all of the layer's pixels, including those outside the canvas. To prevent this from happening, do the following before converting the layer into a Smart Object. Press Command/Control + A to select all of the pixels and then apply a mask to the layer.
