Not a lawyer, not your lawyer, and no, I don't play a lawyer on TV.

The KOSA act claims to be about protecting kids, and its branded as such, but it will honestly harm kids and censor free anonymous speech online.

Protecting kids is good. But KOSA is a very political and badly written act that greatly limits free speech, doesn't understand tech, and doesn't allow modern medical science be considered.

Yes, lets protect kids. Protecting kids is good. But this doesn't do that. Lets not remove free speech or add millions of dollars in needless or unsafe costs while doing it. This bill censors the internet ad effectively taxes tech and anonymous free speech for adults out of business.

Its also going to really change how teams are required to write code, and will greatly impact tech companies, effectively regulating some out of business, due to the addition costs.

Hope your systems design skills are good enough to pass the requirements of this law, because things that are perfectly ok and legal for adults are also impacted as it hurts innovation while effectively mandating identity verification for online speech, just on the added costs alone.

Companies will just choose the cheaper option: Censorship

Alexa got the math wrong and I pointed that out, but I know people will not get that or not understand so lets look at it deeper:

Given 140,000,000 users
Given 1% of that is 1,400,000 requests reported (falsely or not)
Legal TTL of 10 days, expecting 8 hour shifts per worker
EVEN FOR FALSE REQUESTS

1,400,000 requests with a minimal TTL of 10 work days given 8 hours a day per person = 17,500 requests an hour that must be sustained by law

Lets say you Pay these 17,500 support agents all $50k/year

Here is where Alexa messed up: It heard 17.5, not 17.5 thousand

So 17,500 people an hour being paid $50k/year is 17,500 people an hour (assuming 3 worldwide 8 hour shifts to provide 24/7 coverage) being paid ($50k/year/2080 := ~24.04/hour), or $420.70/hour. Plus taxes and all that, more like 50/hour, or $841.40/hour (plus expenses)

So if you have 1% of 140MM users being reported falsely by bots that means you need to pay about $1,000/hour under this law, removing anonymous free speech as a cost savings, and lets face it, more than 1% will get reported by bots falsely.

We have already seen several platforms remove reviews and comments (crunchyroll, etc) possibly in prep for this act.
