New York University employs Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH) for its breadth of topics, but also recognizes its inherent biases, slow nature to change, and conceptual gaps for specific areas. Focused subject term lists, such as Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) or Homosaurus, provide opportunities to address gaps in concepts, address the damage done by harmful subject headings, and ultimately, enhance the discovery of archival collections. This presentation will focus on the implementation of alternate vocabularies using ArchivesSpace, including a practical overview of system functionality, local policy considerations, an examination of the role of controlled access points alongside narrative archival description, and an affirmation that we are responsible for our metadata and its impact on our staff and users.
