Commander of the UNPOL General Brigade Georges-Pierre Monchotte explains the mandate of the police component of the United Nations Mission for Justice Support in Haiti (MINUJUSTH) has 1275 personnel including 295 international police and 980 members of 7 police units deployed throughout the country alongside the Haitian National Police. The police component has continued to support the PNH to ensure public safety in everyday life but also at major events such as elections, the enthronement of the President of the Republic in February 2017, the carnival celebrations and more recently during the passage of Hurricanes Irma and Maria. The fight against organized crime is also a priority.
United Nations police are deployed in 11 peacekeeping operations and 6 special political missions. Currently 90 countries deploy more than 12,000 police officers, of which 10%, or 1,187, are women from 70 countries.
The United Nations Police is mandated to strengthen international peace and security by assisting conflict-affected, post-conflict and crisis-affected Member States to provide effective, efficient and effective policing services. representative, flexible and responsible, at the service of the population and for its protection. The United Nations Police consists of formed police units (66% at present) and non-incorporated police (34%). These include specialized teams, contracted police officers and civilian experts.
