José Javier De La Gasca, Permanent Representative of Ecuador to the United Nations, said that the Venezuelan authorities “are repressing the Venezuelan people who are demanding that their will, as expressed at the ballot boxes, be respected.”
Addressing the press today (5 Sep) De La Gasca said, “The humanitarian, economic, political, human right and security crisis in Venezuela has cost more than 7.7 million Venezuelan citizens to leave their country in search of better opportunities, and 6 million of which have settled in several Latin American countries. Undoubtedly, these facts allowed us to conclude that an important segment of the Venezuela population is going through a humanitarian crisis.”
He also said, “The actions taken by the regime of Nicolas Maduro since the presidential elections held on last July 28 which have exacerbated the Venezuela crisis, make it imperative for the Council to consider it yet again. The current trajectory of escalating tensions in Venezuela, claims of human rights violation and violent and disappropriate repression against the population threatened to undermine regional stability.”
He stressed, “Free, fair, transparent, and inclusive elections are the pillar for democratic stability, sustainable development, and social peace in Venezuela. Ecuador has therefore called the Venezuelan authorities to comply with the Inter-American Democratic Charter, and to act in line with the objectives of the Barbados agreement.”
He stated, “The Venezuelan authorities are not respecting their commitments to strengthen democracy and promote culture of tolerance and coexistence. On the contrary, they are repressing the Venezuelan people who are demanding that their will, as express at the ballot boxes, be respected.”
Answering a question he said, “We believe that the escalation of tensions in Venezuela has made it necessary for the Security Council to be informed about the situation in Venezuela through the reports presented by the Secretariat. This is precisely a preventive role and a defense of the principles of the Charter. This has led us to meet this morning. The positions have been, in some cases, favorable to understanding a situation like this. We understand the natural divisions within the Council. However, we all agree, most of us agree, that these situations are related to regional peace. They are situations that need to be addressed. What will happen next? Well, the Council must remain attentive to what unfolds.”
