Losing Your Parent at Christmas: Bianca Beauchamp on grieving her dad's passing
"Christmas will always be associated with his (my dad's) passing. My family was always quite difficult. I was raised in a modest family, economy wise... I was surrounded with love, but yet my parents used to fight a lot. And Christmas would be a time of the year that they were fighting a lot about money, about presents. And I was like, I don't want presents. I want my dad and mom to be okay, to love me, to stop the yelling or the fighting all the time. And then, you know, at some point, they they split. For personal reasons, I didn't speak to my dad for the past ten years. He actually didn't want to speak with me.
So the police officers that day, they showed up to my home and not to my mom’s place. And it was a shock for me because I haven't seen or speak to my dad for the past ten years. And it was a little bit traumatic to be the one emptying his apartment and doing all that by myself because my mom is old and I don't know where my sister is. I have an older sister and I haven't seen her for at least 20 years. So basically this is why Christmas now is also associated to weird memories of seeing myself emptying that apartment."
