When you travel for a long time and you don't want to take pictures with you smartphone only and saving your pictures and video footage can be a pain in the ass. There are several ways to backup your files:

SD memory card + tablet + cloud storage
We thought it would be smart idea to buy micro SD memory cards you can put in a tablet and upload them to the cloud. This way all your data will be save even if your devices get stolen. I set up several could storage accounts and used different email addresses, so we ended up with over a 100 gigabyte of cloud storage.

But finally the wifi was so slow (even in countries like New Zealand or Australia, that we couldn't upload our files.

SD memory card + computer of your hostel/internet cafe + external harddrive

For sure you should always bring an external harddrive when you travel. Your pictures need to be saved somewhere as your camera can get stolen. The problem is transferring your videos and pictures to your harddrive by using a computer of a hostel can take ages. We lost a lot of time in hostels saving our files on our harddrive (many times the computers were slow, we needed to install the right drivers etc.). You rather want go to the beach! One day we even lost all the pictures we took in Laos as we used a shitty computer which killed our memory card. So even this way is not that save.

SD memory card + laptop/notebook + external harddrive

The best way to backup your pictures and video footage while you travel is probably to bring your own laptop and an external harddrive. This way you can use spare time to save and sort your files. You can do it at night time, in the bus, train etc. You don't need to install drivers all the time, it is just a save way to backup your pictures and videos. We would also save them on your computer AND your external harddrive just to be safe.

Another advice is to meet people while you are travelling (like family members, friends etc.). They can bring you a new external harddrive and take home the one you save all your pictures on. So all your files will be home waiting for you.

In general I would always bring at least 5 to 6 SD memory cards when you use a camera and also a GoPro. Minimum: three SD memory cards for each device.
