The MixBus is a large-format location recording vehicle, designed to produce up to 5.1 audio from a mobile critical listening environment. The MixBus has provided audio for shows on broadcasters like the BBC and ITV, as well as many state events, including royal weddings and funerals.
Founder Conrad Fletcher built the MixBus with Live-to-Cinema events in mind, a hugely important aspect of The MixBus's output. Live-to-Cinema events bring live music, theatre performances and musicals directly to cinema, making a wide variety of events accessible to a larger audience.
The MixBus has also been directly involved in the sound for over 100 broadcasts of "National Theatre Live", bringing performances from the prestigious National Theatre to cinemas worldwide. Conrad and his team have worked on contemporary productions like Phoebe Waller-Bridge's Fleabag and Prima Facie, as well as theatre classics All My Sons and Streetcar Named Desire.
On-board is a wide range of devices from RME Audio, Ferrofish and Appsys Pro Audio. Three RME MADIface XT's offer failsafe triplicate recording capability, whilst the Fireface UFX is on-hand to handle software effects from MainStage. Their Ferrofish A32pro Dante serves as the conversion point between the Dante systems found in many theatres and the MADI-based MixBus, whilst the Appsys Mulitverter MVR-64 makes sure they are ready to work in any audio format at a moment's notice.
Parked outside the National Theatre preparing to record another edition of National Theatre Live, we sat down with Conrad and Sound Guarantee Chris Kalcov to talk about the pressures of recording Live-to-Cinema events, the evolution of the Mixbus and the important role of RME, Ferrofish and Appsys devices in their large-format location recording vehicle.
