Audio Visual artists Strange Pill – comprised of Ben Hardy and Zahara Muñoz-Vicens – have been experimenting with musical perspectives since as early as 2010. Their work regularly merges filmed live performance cut-ups, locations, loops, touch-screens, holograms, projections, interactivity and video art to create new ways of experience music.
After many years of working with musicians “on location” – including individually recording members of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra – Ben and Zahara set about creating a recording space that allowed them to flexibly record individual musicians whilst retaining the character of live performance.
The search for a space lead them to transform their home in South West London into a hidden recording studio, keeping the character of their house whilst offering near-zero latency recording from every room. Hidden behind cabinets and inside bookcases are RME Octamic XTCs and 12Mic preamps, all sent via MADI to a MADIface XT in their “control room”, bringing the “live recording” feeling to every part of their home.
We sat down with Ben and Zahara to discuss their project with the NYPO and holographic installation work, as well as how they set about transforming their home into a hidden recording studio with the help of RME’s 12Mic.
