Longleaf pine forests are one of the most biodiverse ecosystems in the world. This unique tree has different growth stages, and begins its life growing close to the ground for several years before it starts to grow vertically. In Charleston, South Carolina, One Tree Planted and Longleaf Alliance are planting longleaf pines in Two Pines County Park.
The property was previously owned by a paper company, which grew fast growing pine species for making pulp. When the park was purchased, a forest management plan was created to restore the native longleaf ecosystem to the park and support other species such as red-cockaded woodpeckers, gopher tortoises and other unique species. The woodpeckers are a federally endangered species, but with forest recovery they are getting close to being taken off of that list.
Longleaf pine is a fire adapted species- it is important to burn to keep the herbaceous diverse ground cover systems intact. This practice removes competition, exposes ground for seed germination, and provides many benefits to the park.
