Bollywood - A Brief History
Bollywood’s evolutionary timeline runs roughly parallel, albeit slightly more slowly, to that of the American movie industry. Hollywood’s inception is often cited as 1910, due to the fact that D.W. Griffith’s Old California was the first picture to be filmed there and released in March of that year. This event was soon followed by the opening of the first studio in that location in 1911. From there, the movie industry hit the ground running, continuing to move steadily forward through the early decades of the 20th century by seizing on advances in technology, exploring new creative schools of thought, and capitalizing on it’s own increasing cultural significance. Bollywood, too, can trace its roots to the turn of the last century, when the visionary pioneer Dadasaheb Phalke, oversaw the production of twenty-three movies, beginning in 1913.
