These scenes were captured in Bend last weekend by OPB's "Oregon Field Guide" team. The city’s whitewater park on the Deschutes River can attract thousands of floaters a day in the summer. With tubes bumping into one another and flipping over in the rapids, it's no surprise that many belongings end up on the bottom of the river. 🌊
That's where Loot the Deschutes (@lootthedeschutes3253) comes in. The group of about a dozen volunteers serves as the river's unofficial lost and found, diving to rescue sunken items and return them to their owners. A typical day's finds include phones, car keys, sunglasses and jewelry.
** Floating on rivers includes safety risks. If you plan to go out on the water, wear a life jacket, keep your belongings secure and follow the rules on the river. **

Loot the Deschutes will also be featured in an upcoming episode of Oregon Field Guide. Stay tuned!
