Have you ever felt “stuck” in life? Whether it was your job going no where, a relationship with a bad partner, or you just plain wanted a change. Like you wanted to move out of your parents house or move to a new city but it feels like every option leads to a question mark. Like you can’t see a positive outcome no matter what move you make.
We’ve all felt stuck at one point or another. Even the most successful people among us. Because it’s a right of passage. A trial. To see if you have what it takes to be independent.
And it sucks. You never want to be stuck. Stagnating. Doing nothing. I’d rather be moving forward. And that’s the drive you need to get out of a rut.
I can tell you that no matter what choices you’re up against, inaction will always be the worst choice. Not taking action is screwing yourself. I get physically ill when I watch people who get stuck and they just accept it. They choose to do nothing. And worst of all they want you to do nothing.
You can’t predict the future. I know you can’t because I’ve tried. I’ve tried mapping out and calculating every decision in my life so that I know exactly what the best choice will be. I’ve dreamt up inventing a time machine so I could travel back in time and change things so I wouldn’t get stuck. Don’t let yourself get lost in these kind of thoughts. You can’t know everything that’s going to happen in life.
Of course you should plan. You would be crazy not to plan your life out. But you have to leave some room for error. Because some decisions you make won’t go the way you planned. And some will just be wrong. But that’s just how things go.
The good news is, if you’re smart, there will always be an opportunity for you somewhere. Because you weighed your options. You know what you’re capable of. And you’re not going to settle. When you’re stuck you just keep pushing and pushing. Be stubborn in a good way. Don’t take no for an answer. Someone tells you it can’t be done, tell them “fine, I’ll do it another way!”.
The real reason why you hold back on your decisions is because you think about the worst possible outcome first. You think if I make the wrong choice the whole world will come smashing down. And very rarely does that actually happen. What are the odds that taking an action when you feel stuck will be the worst thing that has ever happened to you. Hell, if you’re really stuck, like you hit rock bottom, the only way is up.
It’s rare for a logical intelligent person like yourself to end up in that situation. Because you have a support system. Reliable and trustworthy friends. A close knit family. If you don’t have these relationships, you should try to build them.
You have knowledge. You know that you’re capable of more. That’s why your brain is pushing you so hard in the moment of being stuck. It’s because you feel like you can do better. And you can, you’re just nervous about the outcomes of your actions.
And it goes without saying but you should be saving a nest egg. Always be financially conservative. Live below your means. Prepare for the future. Invest your money into your education.
Now that I think of it, there’s so many requirements to making successful decisions. You just have to be patient. You’re going to feel stuck a lot in life. It’s not just in a transition phase, although those are probably the biggest ones.
You’ll always have to keep planning. And always have to keep re-evaluating. In some cases the stakes get even higher when you get older. So it’s better to train yourself now to make good decisions.
