The ganzfeld effect (from German “full field”), or perceptual deprivation, is a perception phenomenon caused by a person being in a homogeneous and structureless visual and auditory environment. The effect occurs when the brain uses white noise to complement the visual experience when there is a lack of visual information. White noise is interpreted by the upper visual cortex of the brain, which gives rise to hallucinations.
