Concerts traditionally associated with classical music have undergone several changes since the new millennium, which is also true for the orchestra in concert performance. While these changes are multifaceted in nature, no one can ignore the preponderance of openness to musical genres outside the classical tradition. Terms such as hybridity, fusion, crossover and decompartmentalization have often been used to describe this musical reality, as much in classical music as in other genres such as jazz or music for the screen. This dialogue between musical genres in the concert hall with orchestra and what this means for the musical experience. The focus will be on the opening up of classical music to other musical genres and will be followed by a discussion of the logistical challenges of programming for this type of musical encounter; finally, the discussion will look at the different types of listeners who come together in concert halls and the issues that arise for audience development.
