Indira Gandhi (1917–1984): Born in Allahabad, India, she was India’s first and only female prime minister and governed from 1966 to 1977 and again from 1980 to 1984. She was the daughter of India’s first prime minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, and the mother of India’s sixth prime minister, Rajiv Gandhi, who succeeded her after her assassination on October 31, 1984.
Gandhi was known for her political intransigence and centralizing the power of the Indian government. She used peaceful, passive resistance methods while leading campaigns to eradicate poverty, establish ethnic and religious unity, promote women’s rights, and liberate India from foreign dominance.
She is remembered as one of the most powerful women in the world during her tenure, leading India through the Green Revolution, geopolitical conflicts with China and Pakistan, and her anti-poverty campaign in the 1980s that led her to become known as “Mother Indira.” In a 1999 poll organized by the BBC, she was named “Woman of the Millennium.” In 2020, she was named among the 100 women who defined the past century by Time magazine.
This month we celebrate Women's History and remember Indira Gandhi for her achievements in Indian politics.
