Megan Rapinoe, born on July 5, 1985, in Redding, California, is a former professional soccer player and Olympian (2012, 2020) who spent most of her career playing for the OL Reign of the National Women’s Soccer League. She represented the United States National Team at two Olympic Games (2012, 2020) and four FIFA Women’s World Cup tournaments (2011, 2015, 2019 and 2023), winning two world titles in 2015 and 2019, and one Olympic gold medal in 2012. She won the Ballon d’Or Féminin and Golden Ball award in 2019, along with being named The Best Women’s Player that same year.
Rapinoe is involved with many LGBTQIA+ organizations, and a strong advocate for the inclusion of transgender women to play women’s sports. In 2013 she received the Board of Directors Award from the Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Center. She was included in Time’s 100 Most Influential People of 2020 and received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from US President Joe Biden in 2022.
This month we celebrate LGBTQ+ Pride and honor Megan Rapinoe for her many achievements.
