Drum Shift | Changing the way we record and produce drums!
The way we produce drums is changing yet again. We’ve evolved from recording acoustic drums played by humans to enhancing the sounds with high quality samples, to sequencers that mimic human style, to pasting drum loops and phrases. And now, we’re finding some middle ground with generative midi, session drummers and a variety of AI tools that create drum patterns and beats. We’ve effectively reduced the process of programming drums with grooves, and generative tools from a variety of vendors. Today, you can develop patterns, parts and regions, then separately select the sounds and kit pieces. Some drum software packages don’t come with a sequencer. You can change those sounds on a whim and edit the midi patterns without ever having to record a second take.
Sure there are drummers and others who will argue human drummers on an acoustic kit will never be replaced, and perhaps that’s true for live or creativity in the studio, but everything you’re hearing on the charts has samples triggered by transients. Every hit song has enhanced sounds.
