The NieR train continues with this arrangement (also recorded last summer) of Song of the Ancients, for ambient Percussion Ensemble - a new experiment of mine! While there are many different versions of this iconic track in-game (and I enjoy all of them), the ambient "library" version from the remaster/ver.1.22 really stuck with me and got me thinking - what if I arranged this for as many melodic metallophones as I could find?
I pulled together as many melodic metals as I could, and ended up with the instruments you see here - pedal glockenspiel, crotales, almglocken, gongs, chimes, and vibraphone. Threw in the tambourine for some rhythmic percussion, and of course, had to include the trusty low-end marimba rolls for more warmth and bass, and with that, I had a pretty neat ambient ensemble! The neat thing about these instruments is that a combination of different mallets and techniques (like bowing) can produce such a large variety of timbres and textures, and I'm glad I was able to explore so many different ones here, although mixing it certainly was a bit of a challenge.
I've got one final NieR video coming soon, and then I'll be on a bit of a break as I move between cities, but I've got lots more planned for the future, including more NieR!
