Welcome to today’s edition of the OpEx Minute, presented by EMS Consulting Group. Today we will be talking about takt time. Takt time, often mistaken for cycle time, is not dependent on your productivity- it is a measure of customer demand expressed in units of time.
Takt time can be thought of as the heartbeat or pace of the customer. Of course, the most commonly cited example you will find in the literature would be takt time for an automotive assembly plant. For example, one automobile must be completed every 45 seconds. Takt time can be used for more than just production processes. We can have a takt time for insurance claims processing or patients visiting a medical office. Let’s talk about the calculation for takt time.
Takt Time = Available work-time per day or per shift / Customer demand per day or per shift
For example, let’s suppose our operation works an 8 hour shift and has two 15 minute breaks. We would say our work time is 7.5 hours or 450 minutes or 27000 seconds.
Let’s suppose our demand per shift is 450 units. They can be physical products or they can be insurance claims, invoices, IT ticket requests, or even patients we are serving..
To calculate takt time we divide 450 minutes by 450 units. This gives us a takt time of 1 minute.
How do we use takt time? Two major ways we can use the concept of takt time include:
1. To design our standard work. Our standard work must be designed such that it meets takt time.
2. To analyze capacity in our value stream. For example, can each process in our value stream meet the 1 minute takt time?
What about changes to takt time? In an automotive plant, takt time is typically adjusted monthly. In other cases, it could more or less frequently.
