Vladimir, the former capital of medieval Ruthenia, is one of the must see one-day trips from Moscow for anyone who is a fan of antiquity. With no fewer than 3 UNESCO World Heritage Sites all within walking distance, you can see a time of the world that in so many ways feels unchanged from when Mongolian hordes ravaged the lands. From the Dormition Cathedral (c. 1160) with original Andrey Rublev icons still painted on the walls to the St. Demetrius Cathedral (c. 1157) with it's 1000+ carvings of griffins, dragons (and alexander the great!), this city has a piece of the ancient east that can satisfy any curiosity.
