Why Did Windows Phone Fail?
In today’s world everywhere you look you’ll see someone holding an Ios or android device but there used to be a 3rd option in the form of windows phone, in this video we’re going to look at why windows phone failed.

The first version of windows phone known as windows phone phone 7 was released in 2010 and new versions continued to be released until Microsoft stopped active development in 2017 and the platform was declared end of life in 2020.
One of thew main reason windows phone failed was late entry to the market, entering after iOS and Android had already established themselves as dominant players. This made it difficult for Windows Phone to gain traction and during its entire lifespan it failed to get above 3.4% total market share.
Another reason for the failure of windows phone was lack of developer support. the Windows Phone platform struggled to attract developers to create apps for its ecosystem. As a result, it had a limited app selection compared to iOS and Android, which made it less appealing to consumers. Popular apps like snapchat, google maps and gmail weren’t available and many banks didn’t create an online banking app for windows phones. Windows phone didn’t even have an official youtube app, just alternatives like my tube which was actually very well received as it allowed users to download videos onto their sd card and keep them forever.
Lack of hardware diversity was another factor. Unlike Android, which runs on devices from various manufacturers, Windows Phone had limited hardware diversity, with most devices coming from Nokia until their mobile phone division was acquired by Microsoft. This limited choice may have deterred some consumers. If you’re favourite manufacturer wasn’t shipping phones with windows phone os, you were unlikely to make the change.
Its similar appearance to windows 8 also caused a lot of people to be put off from windows phone. As you likely know windows 8 was fairly poorly received by most users and featured a very similar look to windows phone with live tiles in the start menu. Once people had used windows 8 and had a poor experience with it they were then likely to have a negative opinion on a phone operating system sharing the same looks. This wasn’t helped by the fact Microsoft positioned Windows Phone as tightly integrated with its Windows ecosystem, offering features like Microsoft Office, OneDrive and Xbox integration. Further connecting windows 8 and windows phone in the mind of consumers.
