Have you ever wondered how long your digitally stored data will last? Will people thousands of years in the future still be able to view and read our documents or emails that we create and save today? In this video we’re going to have a look at how long data might last if stored on commonly used storage methods.

We’ll start by having a look at the expected life of one of the older means of storage still in use today, dvd’s. They’re made of layers of polycarbonate plastic. The surface of a DVD is coated with a reflective layer. Data is encoded onto the disc in the form of microscopic pits and lands. These pits and lands represent binary data (0s and 1s). The pattern of pits and lands is arranged in a spiral track that starts from the centre and moves outward to the edge of the disc. Given enough time the DVD polycarbonate plastic layers will likely begin to separate, exposing the data layer to oxygen, thus slowly destroying the data stored on it. This usually happens in 10 – 20 years but does vary widely.
Next lets talk about hard drives. They’re used in budget and slightly older devices but are still common today in laptops and computers. They use a spinning disk and needle that reads the data, these moving and sometimes fragile mechanical parts are very prone to deterioration and breaking if moved frequently. On average you can expect a hard drive to last 5-10 years.
Now lets talk about what is already becoming the standard for everyday storage ands that’s SSD’’s, found in games consoles, servers and computers just to name a few. they’re quickly replacing hard drives as the most common storage option. SSd’s use typically use flash memory and have no moving parts, all data is written and read electronically this makes them more reliable than mechanical hard drives. Manufacturer claims on SSD life expectancy vary but on average they last between 10 and 20 years.
Finally lets have a look at M-discs. These are are a lesser known method of storing data and look similar to dvds or cd’s but there's a huge difference. If you recall earlier we mentioned dvds are made of layers of polycarbonate plastic and can separate and deteriorate over time. With an M-DISC data is engraved into a patented rock-like layer that is resistant to extreme conditions of light, temperature and humidity. The company behind these discs claim the expected lifetime of the discs to be at least an incredible 1000 years! They can be read using most regular dvd drives and written to using m disk compatible blu ray drives. I’ve left a link in the description to the m discs and a blu ray drive to write to them if you’d like to have a go at storing data that will long outlive you.
