In its official blog post today, Twitter announced that it was introducing and testing a new feature—audio tweets (Twitter voice messages), to add human touch to the platform. This newly introduced tweet format permits users to record up to 140 seconds of audio, either as a standalone tweet or as an audio clip in addition to a text tweet. However, there are a few problems associated with this new feature. For example, in the absence of any built-in transcription, this new feature would make the platform partially or totally inaccessible to users who are deaf or mute. Moreover, warning Twitter users about audio content that is not safe for work would also be a major challenge, especially if someone’s accent, is not recognizable to an automated transcription service, but clearly recognizable to human ears. Manually reviewing, audio tweets, flagged by users, could be a possible solution, but it would indeed be a challenging task. Finally, fighting misinformation, would become far more challenging. This new feature is currently available to a select group of iPhone (iOS) users. Please share your thoughts in the comments section below.
