This is a short video from Game 2 of the 1973 Eastern Conference Finals between the Boston Celtics and the Knicks April 18 in New York, won by the Knicks, 129-96.
It was part of the original Knicks broadcast, and was dug up by the Al Trautwig Madison Square Garden Vault program. Bob Wolff and Cal Ramsey are the announcers.
The Celtics had romped in Game 1 in Boston, and the Knicks turned the tables back at the Garden. New York, already ahead by 10 points, goes on an 8-0 run to put a stranglehold on the contest.
Poor Hank Finkel, who was a decent fundamental player but famously no Bill Russell. Giving Dave Cowens a rest, Finkel doubles a man and leaves Willis Reed wide open for 2, sets a nice pick but watches Don Chaney throw up an airball, then gets faked out by Reed on the baseline. Tommy Heinsohn couldn't get Big Red back in the game fast enough.
The Knicks won Game 3 in Boston, during which Celtics legend John Havlicek tore muscles in his shoulder running into a pick. Hondo sat out Game 4, a double-OT Knicks triumph, then courageously returned for Celtics wins in Games 5 and 6 but clearly was not his usual self. Walt Frazier paced the Knicks to a Game 7 win in Boston and New York went on to claim the championship over the Lakers.
