This year's El Niño conditions will bring infrequent visitors to the California coast. One that is especially likely to show up and to also generate a lot of excitement is the Yellow-bellied Sea Snake. Only six Yellow-bellied Sea Snakes have ever been documented in California, and five of these washed ashore during previous El Niño events. These snakes show up along the California Coast between October and January. They wash ashore during the spring tides, the large tidal swings associated with new and full moons. The first period in which a sea snake is most likely to be found along Southern California beaches starts with the October 14th New Moon, meaning one is likely to show up on or shortly following this new moon.
