Los Angeles, with its ample sunshine and lack of dark caves, might not seem like an obvious bat haven. But the world’s only flying animal has been spotted flying over every neighborhood – from South L.A. to the San Fernando Valley.
The fuzzy creatures take shelter in freeway underpasses and palm trees, and can be seen chowing down on bugs in the glow of the lights illuminating Dodgers Stadium. In fact, experts have documented 14 bat species in the L.A. area — more than they expected.
While bats are polarizing, evoking fear in some, they’re “having a moment,” according to Miguel Ordeñana, a bat expert with the L.A. County Natural History Museum. “It's a growing kind of community of bat evangelists, at least in Los Angeles, and it's been a lot of kind of momentum that's being built in such a short amount of time,” he said.
