Did you know there’s a New Japan Pro Wrestling anime?
Well sort of.
It’s called Tiger Mask Double. Kazuchika Okada, Yuji Nagata, Hiroshi Tanahashi and more are all characters in the show. Even Red Shoes makes an appearance. And a lot of the matches take place in New Japan rings
The story follows a young pro wrestler on a quest to avenge his old mentor, who was crippled in the ring by a sadistic wrestler part of a nefarious group called “tiger den”. He has to fight his way through all these crazy evil pro wrestlers and he does it with the help of familiar faces at New Japan Pro Wrestling.
The show itself is even more over the top than real life pro wrestling – I mean there’s a secret underground training base, wrestling in the show is obviously real and very dangerous and there’s this character who has really big… personality.
Tiger Mask W came out in 2016 and is a sequel to the original tiger mask manga and anime that premiered way back in 1969. Which in case you’re wondering is where the real life wrestling character of tiger mask actually comes from.
Speaking of which, to help promote the anime, none other than Kota Ibushi appeared as Tiger Double at Wrestle Kingdom 11.
