A 200g bouncy ball is dropped from a height of 1.8m onto flat ground. Upon striking the ground the ball rebounds with 80% of the speed it had before hitting the ground. Given the ball is in contact with the ground for 0.05s, calculate the average force between the ball and the ground.

This problem applies linear momentum and specifically the concept of impulse to an object colliding with the ground. Kinematics come into play in this problem but typically the challenge most people face here is the shift in signs of the balls velocity as it strikes the ground.

This problem commonly comes up in introductory physics courses such as AP Physics 1, AP Physics C Mechanics and early college mechanics. It also forms the foundation for higher level problems that show up on the A Levels and JEE.
