There is an old RTS set on Dune which was made by none other than Westwood Studios, and you can’t even buy it anywhere. It is called Emperor: Battle for Dune, and I am here to show you not just where to download the original files but also how to use a fan-made patch called EmperorLauncher, which modifies Emperor: Battle for Dune to run on modern systems including Windows 11.

This patch includes high resolution support, being able to play the co-op campaign and even online multiplayer with a direct ip connection, besides the three main campaigns and skirmish vs AI. All the necessary links are in the description below, along with a link to a similar video I made about Universe at War: Earth Assault and how to get and play that old gem as well.
There is a tutorial here if you need to familiarize yourself with the gameplay, especially the old school left click to attack and move command, while right click is used for deselecting. Also, don't forget that these old games let you use a tank to crush infantry units with a satisfying audio cue. So use that to your advantage. Another expected element of old games are red barrels which help you by blowing up enemy units and buildings if you notice and destroy them. There are many more old school elements like veterancy levels for units and even buildings, destroying remains on the ground which hide extra funds to pick up, and also walls to construct as part of the base defenses.
There are the three main factions in this game and so one campaign for each but because this is a story about fighting for control of Dune and the all important spice Melange it is a three way fight on the same map whichever one you choose. There you pick the territory you want to attack and a new mission vs an enemy faction is started. Do note more factions are involved in this storyline, and they also show up as subfactions which are available in the skirmish mode. More on them later.
The three separate houses of the Landsraad which are at war on Dune in this game are the lore accurate Atreides and Harkonnen but also the made up Ordos, a house entirely dependent on trade and smuggling, especially of weaponry, and illegal technologies imported from Ix. The Atreides are portrayed as the noble house they are and rely on being loved and respected by their population. While Harkonnen are horrible taskmasters and use fear for control attracting psychopaths to their ranks. The Ordos are no better, just a different shade of bad, and they rely on mercenaries and cloned slave soldiers.
One of the things that make this game so special, which definitely isn’t the early 3D look from 2001, are the incredibly detailed and lore accurate full-motion videos with actual actors which is something most Westwood games are fondly remembered by. They even went to such lengths to add dye to mentat’s mouths because of the Sapho juice they drink. Yes, I am that big of a Dune fan and geek.
The additional factions at play straight from Dune lore and they can be used as subhouses in the skirmish part of the game to produce their units once you construct the prerequisite buildings at your base. You have the Imperial Sardaukar, the shock troops of House Corrino, whose infantry is the strongest of them all.
There’s the Fremen, who are native to Dune. All of their units are stealthy, and are able to move through the desert without attracting sandworms. Oh yes, there are definitely hungry sandworms in this one! You can lose both units and harvesters to them. Ixians are another subfaction, and you can use their Infiltrator, stealthed mobile kamikaze unit, and the Projector fast hover tank for fake unit shenanigans.
