Should a Team/Tech Lead Write Code? 🤔
Well, yes and no. Let me explain.
A Development Team Leader’s role implies that you don’t develop directly. Instead, you do everything to make the development process smooth. For example, when a customer wants a new feature, the Lead must clarify what technology to use, what edge cases to cover, and what impact it will have on other features or services.
The Lead’s responsibilities include defining well-detailed tickets for developers, consulting on implementation, and reviewing pull requests. This requires working with code—investigating the existing codebase, brainstorming ideas, or reviewing the code.
While it may seem that the most fun part, writing code, is out of scope, it’s just another type of work. You still have to code, either by providing a draft solution or assigning yourself coding tasks. Additionally, you must investigate best practices and new technologies to apply to your project.
This role requires a deep understanding of not just your work but the entire project and related services, offering a broader perspective. It may not be for everyone, but you might enjoy it.
