The Safe Conduct of Research: We All Take Care of Each Other
When a PNNL staff member had a near-fatal heart attack on the Richland campus, the response of two alert colleagues meant the difference between life and death. It's part of the culture of caring at PNNL, along with the Safe Conduct of Research principles. "It takes a system to save a life," says Captain Paramedic Josh Smith, Richland Fire Department. "It takes the patient to recognize that something's off today. It takes somebody else to maybe even prompt them, 'Hey, you don't look good.' And then it takes them to not be scared to activate that 911 system. And that day, everything was perfect."
