Leopold Stokowski and Ralph Vaughan Williams were both fellow organ students at the Royal College of Music in the 1890s. Neither of them could possibly have foreseen that when Stokowski became a conductor, much of Vaughan Williams's music was in his repertoire. He was a constant champion of the great English composer and in 1949, hei made the first recording of RVW's 6th Symphony with the New York Philharmonic and in 1958 he conducted the US Premiere of the composer's 9th Symphony. One of Stokowski's last recordings, made in 1975 when he was 93, was of Vaughan Williams's "Tallis Fantasia."

Stokowski conducted the Vaughan Williams 8th Symphony twice in London. The first time was in 1957, with the composer in the Royal Box at the Festival Hall. The second occasion occurred in 1964 when the maestro included it in one of his Proms concerts with the BBC Symphony Orchestra at the Royal Albert Hall. From that performance we hear the final movement, entitled "Toccata," which requires a percussion section featuring side drum, triangle, cymbals, bass drum, vibraphone, xylophone, glockenspiel, tubular bells and tuned gongs. As will be heard, Stokowski was completely in his element!

The whole work can be heard in a 6CD ICA Classics 'BBC Legends' box that also includes symphonies by Beethoven, Brahms, Berlioz, Franck, Mahler and Shostakovich, along with other wide-ranging works, all of which show Leopold Stokowski at his very best. (ICA Classics ICAB 5180).
