Leopold Stokowski made his first recordings on acoustic 78rpm discs in 1917 and his last recordings at the age of 95 in 1977, sixty years later. His very last recording coupled two youthful symphonies - Bizet's Symphony in C and Mendelssohn's "Italian" Symphony. The critics were unanimous in their praise, with one describing both performances as "exhilarating." Here from the "Italian" Symphony is the finale, a lively 'Neapolitan 'Saltarello.' It was a popular dance in 16th century Italy and is given a dashing performance by the National Philharmonic under the nonagenarian Maestro's direction. (Issued in a 10-CD Sony Set of Stokowski's Columbia stereo recordings and also released singly on Cala Records.)
