The Bayon is one of several temples in Angkor, an archaeological site just north of Siem Reap. The site of Angkor Thom is surrounded by a square-shaped wall that stands 26 feet high. It sits on the west side of the Siem Reap River, just north of Angkor Wat and west of Ta Prohm. At the center of Angkor Thom is the Bayon, the former state temple. The site has become a popular destination because of the multitude of smiling, serene faces carved into the stone.
Around 1500 meters from the South Gate, we reached a parking area in front of a stunning set of ruins. From afar, it looked like just piles of grey bricks set up in a chaotic manner. I could not figure out what to make of it from a distance. But the more I stepped closer to it, the more I was bombarded with details that gave this temple so much character.
At the very heart of Angkor Thom, the Bayon Temple is regarded as the most important structure of the ancient city. It was constructed around the 12th century, about a hundred years after Angkor Wat, under the rule of King Jayavarman VII. Unlike Angkor Wat which was originally built for Hinduism, the Bayon is a Buddhist site but Hindu elements can still be seen in its architecture.
What sets it apart from all the other temples in the Angkor Archaeological Park are the ubiquitous, mysterious faces that are in every tower wall of the structure — over 216 of them on 54 towers!. Some argue that the faces were both of a deity and of the king. They explained that it was a tradition for Khmer kings to regard themselves as a “devaraja,” or “god-king.”
Three main levels make up the Bayon Temple. They each correspond with three distinct phases of building. Both the inner and outer galleries of the Bayon Temple feature over 11,000 carved figures, known as bas-reliefs. The carvings depict various historical figures and events of the Khmer empire.
