Kieran Hayward travelled nearly two hours from his home in the affluent market town of Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, to a souvenir shop on the seafront in Southend-on-Sea, Essex, to obtain this foot-long blade.
Less than 24 hours later, the teenager stabbed a 32-year-old addict to death in a row over drugs in an Ipswich alleyway. Last month he was jailed for life for killing Daniel Saunders.
Now a Daily Mail investigation can reveal that the shop is still selling a vast array of knives, some for as little as £3, despite local protests.
As these astonishing pictures show, Gaiety Bazaar sells dozens of fearsome weapons, including heavy-duty sheath knives, US combat blades, throwing knives and even keyrings with flick-out blades. On the crowded shelves stuffed with toys, sticks of rock and sea shells, there are also imitation firearms and BB guns, including a £195 replica Heckler and Koch MPS BB machine gun and a lookalike Glock 17 gas pistol.
To the frustration of police, the shop sells packs of what are described as ‘real bullets’ and even a £20 kit advertised as a ‘multi-tool knife, wire cutter, fire lighter and case’. Yesterday Patrick Green, chief executive of the Ben Kinsella Trust, a knife crime-prevention charity set up in memory of the 16-year-old London student stabbed to death in June 2008, said he had no idea it was possible to buy a machete over the counter.
Mr Green, a member of the Home Office’s Serious Violence Crime Taskforce, said: ‘It is terrifying to see that the knives that bring misery and despair to hundreds of families each year are openly on sale in this souvenir shop.
