Hi I'm Shani! I have been an autism specialist for 14 years & am also certified in yoga. I have worked with Jac for all of those 14 years. Jac uses sign language, sounds, approximations, nonverbal looks & gestures to communicate. Jac & I started doing yoga off & on in 2016. She had a long break of not doing any yoga for many months before we filmed this video. Typically we would do yoga in a school setting, so transferring her yoga practice to her home has been difficult. She is adverse to her yoga room for many reasons.
This video is to show that you don't need a special room in order to do yoga. I set up her mat in a neutral place, the kitchen & invited her to come do yoga with me. Its an open space with no closed doors. I allowed her to get up & leave for breaks when she needed to, letting her know that I would request her to come back after 5 minutes. She needed two breaks within this yoga session but always came back willingly.
I wanted to show the reality of what yoga for autism looks like. It can be heavily modified or not. It can be slow, fast, repetitive, fun, exciting, challenging, whiney, happy &/or easy. You'll notice that I count a lot during these sessions as counting works for Jac- she likes numbers, she can follow along & its predictable for her. Perhaps another method would work for you.
I do a lot of "body/sensory work" in between & during poses with Jac because that's what helps her regulate her body in space. That may be overwhelming for some or perhaps even distracting. What works with one person may not work with another- always nice to keep that in mind. These are just a handful of poses that Jac is capable of doing, while many others I have not tried with her just yet. For the purpose of this video, I tried to not repeat the same poses over & over again, but in a regular session I could do the same pose, if enjoyable to Jac, as much as she wanted.
It’s really important to me & I think most importantly to Jac, that poses are not forced. Not only for the safety of Jac's body & mine, but also to build trust & a rapport. Allowing her to move her body on her own helps her gain strength & body awareness. I certainly help guide her & assist in holding poses. But if I feel resistance, I pull back & let go.
I love questions & comments- please feel very welcome & free to do so. You can also email me anytime: [email protected]
